About Us

The Community Music School (CMS) is a non-degree granting outreach program for the University of Alabama School of Music. The CMS serves students of all ages and levels of ability from West Alabama. An accredited member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education, the 50  member CMS faculty is comprised of School of Music faculty, select graduate and undergraduate students, and credentialed professionals from the community.

Over 500 students receive private and group instruction on wind, brass, string, piano, harp, organ, guitar, drums, voice, and composition/theory. The CMS also features a thriving Early Music Enrichment program for children ages birth–7 years. Ensembles include the Adult String Orchestra, Campus Orchestra, and various chamber ensembles. Lessons, classes and ensembles are open for enrollment year-round, with summer options also including a strings camp (Middle School/High School).

The Community Music School offers classes, lessons, and ensembles for any age or ability in a wide range of instruments. We offer outreach to the general public including private lessons, group classes, ensembles, and pre-K enrichment. These non-credit activities are for all ages and all levels of ability. The Community Music School can help you reach your musical goals. Select the Programs tab at the top of the page to learn about all of the resources we offer.
