Stephen Cary joined the University of Alabama's School of Music faculty in 1988. He received his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois. On three occasions Mr. Cary was a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions. He has appeared as soloist across the United States with orchestras and choral organizations. Among the concert works in which he has performed as soloist are Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Bach's Christmas Oratorio and Magnificat, Mozart's Requiem and Mass in C Minor, Liszt's Psalm 13, Haydn's Creation, Handel's Messiah and Israel in Egypt, Dvorak's Requiem, Vaughan Williams' Hodie, and Lloyd Webber's Requiem, which he has performed seven times in Missouri, Mississippi, Florida, and Washington. Opera roles sung by Mr. Cary include Rodolfo (La Bohème), Alfredo (La Traviata), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Jean (Herodiade), and the title role in Albert Herring. His teachers have included Frances Crawford, Evelyn Reynolds, Ronald Hedlund, John Wustman, Gérard Souzay, and Eric Dalheim.
