Graduate Programs

Welcome - Prospective Students - Undergraduate Programs - Graduate Programs - Vocal Ensembles - Voice Faculty

The University of Alabama School of Music is proud to offer both the Master of Music and the Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in voice performance.

In addition to admission to the University's Graduate School, the School of Music requires an audition for entry into all M.M. and D.M.A. programs. Students interested in arranging an audition in voice may contact Dr. Susan Fleming.

The audition program in voice should include a 25-30 minute recital program which demonstrates an understanding of various vocal styles such as lieder, mélodie, 20th century techniques, and opera and oratorio arias. Students should also be able to demonstrate facility in diction and basic comprehension of the foreign languages commonly used in classical singing.

Diagnostic examinations in music history and music theory are administered before the beginning of each semester. These exams must be taken the first semester the student enters the graduate program. More information on how to prepare for these exams may be found by clicking on the links above.

The School of Music Graduate Handbook provides current and detailed information on graduate study in the School of Music. Information for all graduate students in music, as well as specific information for each degree program including curriculum guides, may be found in this handbook. The handbook is designed to supplement the University's official graduate catalog, and students should refer to both sources regularly. The handbook contains specific degree outlines for both the M.M. and D.M.A. programs in voice performance.

Specific courses offered by the voice area for the M.M. and D.M.A. voice performance degrees are outlined here.

Students can now complete their jury sheets online. Simply fill out the form, print 4 copies, and bring them with you to your jury. A computer with a fairly recent version of Microsoft Word is required.

Students may also download the jury sheet in the traditional format as well as the repertoire sheet in Word format.

The University Opera Theatre provides graduate students in voice the opportunity to learn and perform operatic roles in full productions and in scenes, as well as learn about movement, stage combat, and character development. Further information about opera at Alabama, as well as other ensembles of interest to singers, may be found here.
