Graduate Courses

The following courses are offered by the voice faculty for students in the M.M. and D.M.A. programs in voice performance; they may also be of interest to other graduate students in music, particularly those in the M.M. and D.M.A. programs in choral conducting.

Graduate voice courses are offered on a rotating basis; for information about offerings in a particular semester, contact Dr. Fleming.

  • MUS 542 Advanced French Diction (2 hours). Advanced study of French diction for singers, including IPA and practical application. Syllabus.
  • MUS 543 Advanced German Diction (2 hours). Advanced study of German diction for singers, including IPA and practical application. Syllabus.
  • MUS 544 Advanced Italian Diction (2 hours). Advanced study of Italian diction for singers, including IPA and practical application. Syllabus.
  • MUS 545 Graduate Vocal Pedagogy (3 hours). A detailed study of historical and contemporary methods of pedagogy, and anaylisi of pedagogical problems. Syllabus.
  • MUS 642 Advanced Vocal Pedagogy (3 hours). An analytical survey of voice teaching with emphasis on practical application. Syllabus.
  • MUS 574 Graduate Vocal Literature I (3 hours). Indepth study of a particular body of vocal literature, including performances and coachings. Subject matter will vary by semester. Masters level.
  • MUS 575 Graduate Vocal Literature II (3 hours). Indepth study of a particular body of vocal literature, including performances and coachings. Subject matter will vary by semester. Masters level.
  • MUS 652 Special Topics in Vocal Literature I (3 hours). Indepth survey of the performance criteria and historical significance of selected repertoire from solo vocal literature. Subject matter will vary by semester. Doctoral level.
  • MUS 653 Special Topics in Vocal Literature II (3 hours). Indepth survey of the performance criteria and historical significance of selected repertoire from solo vocal literature. Subject matter will vary by semester. Doctoral level.

Graduate students register for applied study under the following course numbers. The number of hours for which each student registers may vary from semester to semester.

  • MUA 574 is for M.M. students in voice performance.
  • MUA 674 is for D.M.A. students in voice performance.
  • MUA 501 is for students in other graduate degree programs, such as choral conducting, who study voice as a secondary instrument at the graduate level.
