OBJECTIVES:

  1. Clarity: to learn the proper choice of speech sounds for the French language (i.e pronunciation).
  2. Accuracy: to learn how to utter these sounds accurately (i.e. enunciation).
  3. Ease: to gain vocal freedom through clearer diction.
  4. Uniformity: to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which indicates exact pronunciation of all languages, regardless of spelling.
  5. Expressiveness: through the mastery of the above objectives, to be able to express oneself as an artist.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Texts used: Diction for Singers by Joan Wall (primary text); Singing in French by Thomas Grubb, and The Singer's Guide to Languages by Marcie Stapp. These two texts will be used as reference materials (i.e. not required): and purchase of a French dictionary which uses IPA is highly recommended.
  2. Minimum requirement of two songs in French (more, if time permits) to be performed as a part of learning the language's sounds.
  3. In addition to the syllabus, an assignment sheet will be distributed with the required reading assignments for each class meeting.
  4. Two written tests (midterm and final) - dates are noted on the assignment sheet. There will be written and oral sections to each test.

GRADES:

The grading scale is: A: 90-100; B: 80-89; C: 70-79; D: 60-69; F: 0-59; I: Incomplete.

ATTENDANCE:

This is a laboratory class. Class attendance is REQUIRED
