General information about transferring to the University of Alabama is available from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. For students in Alabama public colleges, the specific courses which transfer from your school can be found on the STARS web site. Please consult this site carefully and check all the relevant information both for your institution and the University of Alabama. No one in the School of Music is authorized to decide which academic courses will transfer. Besides the information on the STARS site, you will receive a transcript review from your college (the College of Arts and Sciences or the College of Education), stating which courses you have taken will transfer to your degree program. This is your official statement of which courses have transferred. If you are transferring coursework in music theory, you will be required to take a placement examination; more information is available here. Under the Alabama General Studies agreement, the equivalent of about one year of music studies will be transferred for students admitted to the School of Music (i.e., passing their auditions). The music guidelines are available on the STARS site or available in summarized form here. Other music credits, such as a second year of music theory or applied study, are only awarded after examination by the School of Music faculty. Note that a music appreciation course cannot be used by music majors to fulfill the core curriculum's FA (fine arts) requirement. As a general rule of thumb, it is easier to transfer into any music degree program sooner rather than later. Most freshman and sophomore music courses are not structured to accommodate January transfers. Students who transfer after one year at another institution generally proceed in much the same way as those who enter as freshmen; students who transfer after two years at another institution generally require at least two to three academic years to complete degree requirements. The number of music courses, the necessary sequencing of those courses, and the possibility that sophomore-level music credits may not transfer often necessitates the three-year time line. However, students in this position who transfer numerous general studies credits may find their semester course loads are lower than those of a typical music major, and some students view this as a true advantage. Once you have determined that you are interested in transferring to the University of Alabama as a voice major, you will want to contact Dr. Susan Fleming at (205) 348-1470 to schedule an interview and audition. You are welcome to attend a voice lesson, repertory class, or ensemble rehearsal and to meet some voice majors. If you would like a tour of the campus, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 1-800-933-BAMA. You may also wish to check out our tips for new students; though several of them are geared to incoming freshmen, many will apply to your situation as a new transfer student as well. We are very grateful to Dr. Carol Prickett for allowing us to adapt this material from her website. [Back to Prospective Students] [Back to Undergraduate Programs] [Home]
