Voice Advising Guide

This advising guide is intended for students pursuing the B.M. performance degree with an emphasis in voice. It is applicable for students under the 2004-2006 undergraduate catalog. However, this is an unofficial worksheet, and is only for your reference. It is not intended to replace either your catalog or your adviser. If you are ever in doubt about course selections or graduation requirements, please consult Dr. Fleming or your voice instructor.

Tips for freshmen:

  • Students eligible for honors courses may enroll in EN 103 and complete the freshman composition requirement in one semester. All other students should enroll in EN 101 and 102.
  • MATH 110, which satisfies the core curriculum's MA requirement, is the recommended mathematics course for students who have no need to take further coursework in mathematics.
  • Students with less than three years of pre-college piano study should enroll in MUA 121 or MUA 123 for class piano instruction. Students with three or more years of pre-college piano study should enroll in MUA 271 for piano lessons.

Tips for sophomores:

  • MUS 254/255 (Diction for Singers) and MUS 474/475 (Song Literature) are offered in alternating years; MUS 444 Vocal Pedagogy is offered during the same fall semester as MUS 474.
  • At the end of the sophomore year, all music majors must pass the sophomore qualifying examination in order to proceed to 300-level applied study.

Tips for juniors:

  • To fulfill foreign language (FL) requirements, voice majors should select a sequence of two courses (usually 101 and 102) from either French, German, or Italian; additionally, students should take one course (usually 101) in each of the remaining two languages from that list [HU].
  • MUS 254/255 (Diction for Singers) and MUS 474/475 (Song Literature) are offered in alternating years; MUS 444 Vocal Pedagogy is offered during the same fall semester as MUS 474.
  • Students in their final semester of required piano study should take the piano proficiency examination; however, it is not necessary to register for MUA 299 until the semester after you pass the examination.

Tips for seniors:

  • To fulfill foreign language (FL) requirements, voice majors should select a sequence of two courses (usually 101 and 102) from either French, German, or Italian; additionally, students should take one course (usually 101) in each of the remaining two languages from that list [HU].
  • One of the advanced theory courses must be in counterpoint (MUS 303 or MUS 304); the other advanced theory course may be chosen from MUS 303, MUS 304, MUS 403, MUS 418, or MUS 426.
  • Students register for MUA 299 Piano Proficiency in the semester after they pass the examination.
  • When selecting the L/HU/FA core requirement, keep in mind that all students must complete a 6-hour sequence in either literature or history.
  • When selecting the HI/SB elective, keep in mind that all students must complete a 6-hour sequence in either literature or history.

Tips for summer school:

  • When selecting the L and HI core requirements, keep in mind that all students must complete a 6-hour sequence in either literature or history.
  • Always check with the UA registrar prior to taking a course at another institution to be sure it will be accepted to cover the core curriculum requirement you intend.
