Joseph Straus holds degrees from Yale (Ph.D. 1981) and Harvard (B.A. 1976) and has taught at Queens College and The Graduate Center of The City University of New York since 1985. He previously taught at University of Wisconsin-Madison and has held visiting positions at the University of Chicago, Harvard University, Yale University, and New York University. He has written extensively on topics in 20th-century music, including three books, Remaking the Past (Harvard University Press, 1990), The Music of Ruth Crawford Seeger (Cambridge University Press, 1995), and Stravinsky's Late Music (Cambridge University Press, 2001). In addition, he is the author of the textbook Introduction to Post-Tonal Theory (2nd ed: Prentice-Hall, 2001). He is a former President of the Society for Music Theory.
