The conducted instrumental ensembles at The University of Alabama include The Alabama Wind Ensemble, The Huxford Symphony Orchestra, The Alabama Symphonic Band, and The Alabama Jazz Ensemble.

All of the instrumental ensembles at The University of Alabama are dedicated to performing the world’s finest musical works. Holding a status of international reputation, the ensembles of UA have been selected to perform at the International Festival of Bands in England, national and regional conferences of the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, and the Southeast Horn Workshop. Performing with these ensembles, students at UA have premiered numerous new works by noted composers, including Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Nigel Clarke, Donald Grantham and Daniel Bernard Romain. At the University of Alabama, students have been afforded the opportunity to perform with artists such as Charles Vernon of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and actor James Earl Jones.

Kenneth Ozzello is Director of Bands and Professor of Music at The University of Alabama. Dr. Ozzello joined the University faculty in 1989. He holds the Bachelor of Music in Music Education and the Masters of Music in Conducting degrees from West Virginia University; he earned the Doctorate of Education from The University of Alabama.
Dr. Ozzello is the conductor of The Alabama Wind Ensemble. This ensemble is widely acclaimed as one of the premier concert ensembles in the nation. The Alabama Wind Ensemble has commissioned and premiered dozens of new works for band and has performed at numerous national venues. In addition to conducting, Dr. Ozzello teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting classes and music education methods classes. He maintains a busy national schedule of clinics and guest conducting engagements.
Dr. Ozzello is also the director of The University of Alabama "Million Dollar Band." The Million Dollar Band is one of the most widely recognized symbols of The University of Alabama and Crimson Tide Football. In 2003 The University of Alabama "Million Dollar Band" received the prestigious "Sudler Trophy." The Sudler Trophy is the only national award honoring excellence in the college marching band activity.
Carlton McCreery, Director of Orchestral Studies; Violoncello. Director of the University Symphony Orchestra and member of the Cadek Trio. M.M., University of Michigan; B.M., Bowling Green State University. Conducting studies with Elizabeth A.H. Green and Karl Melles. Studied with noted cellists Gregor Piatigorsky, Antonio Janigro, and Lynn Harrell. Artist-Faculty and Principal Conductor of the Repertory Training Orchestra at the Brevard Music Center. University of Alabama faculty member since 1985.
Randall Coleman is currently the Associate Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Alabama where he serves as the conductor of the Alabama Symphonic Band, the Associate Conductor of the Alabama Wind Ensemble and the “Million Dollar Band.” He also teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting and wind band literature classes. Mr. Coleman joins the faculty at the University of Alabama after a successful 25 year career as a high school band director and supervisor in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, and his Masters of Music Education degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mr. Coleman has been an active member of the Georgia Music Educators' Association, where he has held the office of President, First Vice-President and State Band Division Chair. Mr. Coleman has also served as Georgia State Chair for the National Band Association. He was awarded the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association on eight occasions and was the 1992 recipient of the American School Band Directors Association's Stanbury Award for the state of Georgia and the southeastern United States. Mr. Coleman was inducted into the John Philip Sousa Foundations' "Legion of Honor" in 2004 and is also listed in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers." Bands under Mr. Coleman's direction have consistently received superior ratings on the concert stage as well as the marching field. His concert ensembles have performed on three occasions in Carnegie Hall in New York, New York. During his tenure at Milton High School in Milton, Georgia, the Milton Wind Ensemble was invited to perform at the National Convention of the Music Educators’ National Conference, the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, and the Georgia Music Educators' Association State Conference. Marching bands under his direction have won numerous “Grand Championship” awards and also participated in the prestigious New Year's Day Parade in London, England, in 1996 and 2001, and the 2004 Fiesta Bowl Parade in Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Coleman remains in demand as a marching and concert band clinician and adjudicator across the country and in Europe.
Tom Wolfe, Director of Jazz Studies; Associate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences.
M.M., Eastman School of Music; B.M., Capital University. Studied with Gene Bertoncini, Rayburn Wright, Bill Dobbins. Recipient of an Artist Fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Wolfe is the first jazz musician to receive this honor. Kennedy Center/USIA Jazz Ambassador. Toured several countries of North and West Africa under the auspices of this prestigious program, including a performance at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. Awarded by the Druid Arts Council Musician of the Year. Has performed and recorded with Lou Marini, Lew Soloff, Ken Watters, Gene Bertoncini, Bill Goodwin, and Mundelle Lowe among others. President of the Alabama Chapter of the International Association of Jazz Educators. Commissions include the Band of the U.S. Air Force Reserve Jazz Band and other universities in the U.S. Performed throughout the U.S., El Salvador, and France. Clinician and adjudicator at college and high school festivals and jazz camps throughout the region. Former faculty member at University of Southwestern Louisiana, Kenyon College, Otterbein College. University of Alabama faculty member since 1994.
AUDITION PROCEDURES

Winds and Strings
Any wind or string player wishing to be considered for placement in any or all of these ensembles (Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble) will play one audition. Auditions for Fall Semester 2007 will be held on August 20 & 21 The specific dates and times for each group of instruments are listed below.
Percussionists
Any percussionist wishing to be considered for any or all of the concert ensembles (Wind Ensemble, Orchestra or Symphonic Band) must attend a meeting on Tuesday, August 21 in Room 204 of the Moody Music Building at 2:00 p.m.
Rhythm Section Players
Any rhythm section players (bass, guitar, keyboard, drum set) wishing to be considered for the Jazz Ensemble will play a separate audition. Please see date and time listed below.

CHAMBER MUSIC
CHAMBER WINDS
Wind and Percussionist are selected from the Alabama Wind Ensemble, Huxford Symphony Orchestra and the Alabama Symphonic Band to perform selected chamber wind pieces. There is no separate audition process to participate in this group. The rehearsal time is in the chamber music blocks of the ensemble matrix.
ADDITIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC
In addition to the large conducted ensembles addressed at this website, there are also a wide range of chamber ensembles offered through the studio experience and other curricular means. Some of the chamber ensembles include Chamber Winds, Jazz Combos, Percussion Ensemble, String Quartets, Brass Ensembles, Woodwind Quintets and Trios. Please contact the studio teacher of the relevant instrument here.
